Welcome to the webpages of the Steel Structures Research and Design Group at the University of Patras, led by Prof. Theodoros L. Karavasilis.

We are responsible for the delivery of all undergraduate and graduate courses on Steel Structures in the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Patras.

Our research focuses on the development of novel design and retrofit solutions for steel and steel-concrete composite structures, addressing resilience against earthquakes, robustness against extreme hazards such as blast and fire, and aspects related to accelerated construction, deconstruction, and maintenance. We employ an integrated experimental and numerical research approach that fully exploits the state-of-the-art testing facilities and the computing resources of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Patras. This allows us to integrate the most recent advancements in constitutive modelling and numerical simulation with experimental results from full-scale static and dynamic tests. In terms of our research projects, we collaborate with other academic institutions as well as with industrial partners and stakeholders involved in production, design, fabrication, and construction of steel structures. We are open to new research collaborations and we always support ambitious young researchers (MSc, PhD, and Post-Doc) wishing to join our group.

We provide consultancy on structural design and detailing (including 3D BIM models) of steel and steel-concrete composite buildings according to Eurocodes or other international design standards. Our team also offers services in design or assessment/retrofit of steel and steel-concrete composite bridges, suspension bridges, steel wind-turbines, and tall buildings. We can also offer specialist consultancy in design and implementation of energy dissipation devices and seismic isolation systems. You can contact us with any relevant inquiry for consultancy.
